German Rail Union Calls for Strike Oct. 18
More work stoppage threatened Oct. 19, 22-24.

By iJet

The Gewerkschaft Deutscher Lokomotivfuehrer (GDL) trade union called a new round of strikes after rejecting an Oct. 15 pay raise offer from Deutsche Bahn (DB) management. GDL has pledged to continue the strikes until the union receives a better offer. The last rail strike Oct. 12 severely disrupted about one-third of Germany's local and regional trains.

Labor negotiations between the GDL and DB failed Oct. 9, prompting GDL to escalate its strikes over the past several weeks. This caused larger and larger disruptions to rail travel inside Germany. Under a court ruling, GDL may only strike on local train service, though such strikes invariably cause delays for long-distance and cargo trains. GDL is demanding a 31 percent pay hike for train drivers, but DB has rejected it.

Expect massive train service delays for local routes on strike days. Plan alternate means of transportation as a precaution. Rental car agencies and taxi companies are well prepared to serve additional customers.
